An down-compressed file down to any smaller sizes will only solve the temporary storage problem but will of course demand processing power when decompressed and processed similar to the full res image and the only thing I might lose is actually quality.

Then I might just use the full file uncompressed since it will actually use less ram, processor power and more importantly time.

And even if a small raw basically is a tiff, the difference is still the raw editing possibilities are bigger in the small raw then a tiff file, the amount of information in a shadows and highlights are very substantial.

Please note my experience is based on a normal tiff file and not if there are any inherent difference to a Nikon created tiff file.
