Manual lens on NEX7

Just got my Voigtlander 12mm and adapter. Put them on camera and get an error message that lens is improperly installed and nothing works. Hunting through the menu system I found a setting to fire the shutter with no lens attached. Then it fires and takes a picture. Can that be right? I set the camera on S and focused manually. The camera should pick the proper shutter speed. Right? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
