Speaking from experience...

I have a 19-month old son.

I bought a Nikon D5100 when he was 14 months old. Before the D5100 was 30 days old, I returned it and bought a D7000. Mostly for the better AF system (not just the number of AF points, but the whole interface of AF to the user is different from the D5100), the ability to use external flash, the ability to change all sorts of settings on-the-fly with the extra buttons & wheel, and ability to use cheaper AF-D primes.

My current setup is Nikon D7000, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, 85mm f/1.8 AF-D, 18-105 AF-S VR, 70-300 AF-S VR, 105mm f/4 AI-S MF Macro, and a Tamron 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6. I also have a Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 I'm trying to sell. And I bought and returned the Nikkor 70-300 AF-D Non-VR, Nikkor 55-300 VR, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM, and Tamron 18-50 f/2.8 non-VC. I briefly owned an 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 with the D5100. I have an SB-700 flash.

The most consistently stunning shots of my son that I have taken at home have been with the 50mm f/1.4 shot at f/2.8 with either bounce or external flash or sunlight coming through a window, followed by, 50mm f/1.4 wide open in poor lighting (WB often fixed in post-processing), followed by 18-105 with bounce flash. Although I have gotten some excellent photos with all the other lenses, the 35 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8 usually "beg" to be taken off the camera after a few shots at home. The 50mm gives me the best working distance for photographing my son around the house.

The 35mm works best when visiting grandma or going out to restaurants, parties, etc. The SB-700 is not comfortable in restaurants, and that tends to keep the 18-105 at home as well. I'm actually dreaming of a 35mm f/1.4G right now
