Lens Protector?

So I just got my first DSLR and I'm trying to buy a few accessories for it. I was told I should buy a lens protector to protect the lens. My wife will be using the camera and she is handling a newborn, so it seemed like good advice to protect the lens.

I don't want to break the bank, but wanted to see what is a reasonable lens cover?

Tiffen has a cheap UV style one for around $8:

Should I be choosing one of these? I'm no professional but I do want to get some decent shots
