Andrew there are street sellers around many of the popular spots offering cheapo tripods. Got one for 12euro which I used for the Colloseum shot. Gave it back before leaving. Otherwise I used a GorillaPod perched on walls, bins & the floor etc.
The IBIS was quite effective for handheld shots too.
