Sorry, I forgot to mention a crucial detail, which is that the file size difference exists with video quality being the same for the two cameras! (if anything, I'd say the Panny ones even are a tiny bit crisper, although the difference is not as large as the difference in stills quality, where the ranks are reversed). Therefore, this seems to be very efficient compression on the part of the Panny.

I'll try to see how MOVs from other sources are played on my computer...
