A65 - reasonable first DSLR?
Mar 1, 2012

I am approaching retirement and am planning to purchase my first DSLR (used compacts for last 10 years) - I was keen photographer 30 years ago and still have my full Olympus OM2 kit. After some research the prime candidate is the Sony Alpha A65. It is about the correct price range and has advantage for me of built in GPS as have used geotagging extensively in the last few years. I am unlikely to change the camera frequently. If anybody could offer any comment on the following that would be really helpful.

1.The A77 is £300 ($500) more is there any massive disadvantage to A65 as that is cash I could spend on another lens. Also had looked at Pentax K5. IS the A65 a a reasonable choice.

2. Does the seal and weather proofing of A77 really make a difference for average amateur use?

3. The stock lens (18-55) is only extra £70 ($100) - some have said better to get only body and better quality lens any comments as £70 sounds good value or is the lens really not up to scratch?

4. I will need a zoom for general purpose / some wildlife and some have recommended a 17-200 would this be better and save the £70 toward the lens. If so which lens?

5. Another bundle on offer is A65 with 18-55 and for only extra £170 16G card and the Sony Alpha SAL-75300 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 A which sounds reasonable . IS this lens any good - the reviews seem good but often for cheaper Sony cameras. I find the Sony lens range quite confusing.

Any other comments think may help me decide would be useful.

many thanks

Paul
