Lens buying Advise? 24mm Zeiss OR 55-210mm e-mount + EVF
Feb 29, 2012

Short TLDR Version:

If you had the Sony E-mount 50mm lens, and manual lenses ranging from 28mm to 210mm, which would you buy from the sony.ca store?
55-210mm Zoom Lens & The Electronic Viewfinder
OR
Carl Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 Lens
OR
something else?
(a-mount lens?)

(I have a $40 off $499.99/$100 off $999.99 coupon and $650 in sony points through my sony card.)

Ok, ultimately I guess only I can answer this question. But I hope I could get some opinions/advise.

I'm pretty noob-ish when it comes to photography. Hopefully my post isn't too long-winded.

So, I just realized the other day I have quite a lot of sony points on my credit card (over $650 worth)
So I wanted to make a purchase on the sony store.

I'm just wondering, what would you guys buy?

(I Have to buy it from http://store.sony.ca Apparently you can call them to price match...)
I'm trying to gear up for spring :)!

Here is what I currently have:

(E-mount Extension tubes...)

I'm Considering buying from sony.ca :
55-210mm Zoom Lens (SEL55210)
&
Electronic Viewfinder (FDAEV1S)
OR
Carl Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 Lens ONLY
OR
suggestions? a-mount?

I got interested in older manual lenses when I found my fathers old lenses. And there weren't many e-mount lenses available at the time. Try as I might, I couldn't get to like the e-mount 16mm lens. And the 50mm e-mount was back ordered until feb. I enjoy nature photography. Landscapes, Wildlife, Flowers. I'm thinking of getting into some stock photography, but I’m really not good at it, it seems. Not interested in street photography. Maybe only at the local farmers market

My thoughts on the lenses:

Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm seems alright... On a tripod. Heavy. (Adaptors I got have tripod attachment so does not put strain on the camera) Hard to focus hand held. Seems to loose detail in certain lighting. I Need to use a lens hood. Hard to focus quickly on birds that are hopping around here and there. So this would be my argument for getting the 55-210mm e-mount. Since it is AF and has IS.
Can't really be had cheaper elsewhere.

Is the EVF good? It can be had for cheaper on ebay.

I can use my sony card $40 off $499.99 coupon on these. Or buy a bit more and use the $100 of $999.99 coupon.

The Carl Zeiss 24mm. What is it ideal for? I've read various reviews. It seems not to be ideally for landscapes. Taking pictures of people? People in foreground + landscapes? Perhaps for stock photography. Could I just use my 50mm e-mount instead and stand back a bit more? Autofocus seems to be not as important on a 24mm lens as in a 200mm lens. But the 24mm is going up $100 in april. Can use my sony card $100 of $999.99 coupon. Would it be a harder to resell than the 55-210mm? Can't really be had cheaper elsewhere. Hmm.

Any thoughts? Sorry for my noobish-ness
