m4/3 may be bringing back manual focusing
Feb 29, 2012

I have alway's said I much prefere manual focusing, but I have very often wonderd why so few dpr members use it extensivly. Anyway that applies to every talk forum and to a lessor degree in the m4/3 talk forum.

Here I read all the time about people using different kinds of manual focusing lenses. It's almost daily where someone is asking about adapters and which older manual lens to purchase. Yes I know all of this is in some part due to a cost saving measure in using older manual lenses. However this same axiam also applies to all the other types of cameras. Does it not?

So what I am thinking now is there may come a time where a greater number of more knowledgeable members will be here in the m4/3 talk forum. This to me is good news and just goes to show you how popular m4/3 is becoming and will be in the future.

I think the real reason for the resurgence in manual focusing going on here is because of Live View and EVF's. DSLR's are stuck with the oiptical viewfinder. I can hardly believe I wrote that...go back a few years and I would never have thought it possible. But the ability of the Live View LCD and EVF to magnify the image makes a serious difference in the accuracy of manualy focusing. It also adds to the pleasure of manually focusing using your own eyes and your own judgement. Only the modern small electronic cameras such as m4/3 and others have such abilities. One simply cannot add an EVF to a DSLR. Well you could but no one has as of yet. So far the DSLR Live View is not as good either.
So how about that!

Notice how I did not have to resort to comparing the virtues of AF vs. Manual Fous. It's not my intent at all to compare. They both exist and they each have their own strong points, so we cam all use both. Well at least with m4/3!
(Just Kidding I know you can use manual lenses on DSLR's)
