sx230HS chdk

Using the firmware update method, I can get the chdk logo and see the new battery indicator . I can not however discover how to view the chdk menu. Instructions say at this point to switch to record mode but that is not possible as it just turns the camera off and does not return to record mode . Mode for this camera is the key sequence "func" and "disp" at the same time . That does nothing. Anyone know why it doesnt display the chdk menu? confused
