budget SLR and a standard prime/ suitable alternative?

Hi there!

I'm wanting to get something that ought to be very simple, namely a camera with a fast normal lense that I can use to take street photos and pictures of the kids at school, and that doesn't cost the earth. Can anyone recommend anything by canon? I'm not limiting myself to an SLR, but I want good IQ and minimal shutter lag, and it would be nice to have narrow DoF at maximum aperture. Full manual settings are a must. My favoured option at the moment is Nikon D3100+35mm 1.8 DX lense, but I'd like something smaller if possible, or at least some food for thought on alternatives. I'll ask on the panasonic forum about the GF2 aswell... Thanks!

Nikon D3100 Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2
