These chip developments occurs years in advance with Canon who are remember a in house chip manufacturer and designer. They have to crystal ball things 4,5 even 6 or 7 years down the track. Canon achieved a huge lead in CMOS sensor and noise reduction technology over Nikon/Sony failed to notice the video craze and ever since went into catchup mode as because they had such a massive lead they thought they could simply tweak cameras and stay competitive. It was simply a lack of investment in the EOS system , side tracks like their stupid and disastrous video camera and collapsing margins in their compact camera business that led them to basically take their eyes off the ball. The 5D Mk II was their cash cow but they left it untouched for too long and allowed Nikon to bridge the gap. They failed to update the 1D Mk III which left people like me going to Lecia and the Hasselblad system. I guess like any business they have their up and down times. The new 5D camera is indeed a great body with some seriously interesting advances but that market share they had has gone and they won't win it back as easily as they grabbed it in the first place.

What's bad for Canon is good for photographers as now the serious competition keeps prices in check... no more $10,000 EOS 1Ds's

Like to see your rationale. Your posts are generally very informative--so why do you think Canon might have a real problem here?
