wildlife-- 400 f2.8 with TC or 600 f4?

What do you think will perform better:

A 400f2.8 with TC or 600mm?

I will be traveling six weeks in the yukon and alaska to take a lot of shots. since i dont want to use my feet to zoom into the bears, i think it is time for a supertele.

i think the two choices are the 400mm f2.8 or the 600f4. (is there a compelling reason for a 500mm? sure it is a little lighter, but wouldnt you just buy a 600mm at that point?)

any comparison of the 400 vs 600? especially with a TC? the 400 is great with the f2.8 -- it seems cool to be able to do the shallow DOF .. and i wonder, does the f2.8 translate into it being a better piece of glass when you attach a TC?

My goal is reach. I have today a 28-300 so my farthest reach is the 300mm and I cant tell much difference from the 300 vs the 200 on my 70-200. quite simply, i do not take photos that require reach because at 300 i dont have it. so i really need something that will make it a memorable photography experience
