Could Nikon add sRAW to the D800?
Feb 25, 2012

To many people the D800 is not a true D700 replacement because of lower FPS and the 36MP sensor that may have traded MP for noise performance at high ISO. Very large file sizes are also a concern. Canon offers a sRAW file format that is a RAW file down sampled to lower MP. No PP or compression is done by the camera. A similar option on the D800 could allow users to make the camera 18MP or 12MP. Down sampling should lower noise perception and would reduce file sizes addressing two of the main complains. With the smaller RAW files it might be possible to increase the FPS to 6 since the D800 can do this with the smaller DX crop files. Everybody would be happy with the D800 with a sRAW function. Since sRAW is done by software it shouldn't add cost to the camera. Maybe it could be done with a firmware update.
