Sony sensor in E-M5?!
Feb 21, 2012

Do you think this is possible?

This is just a wild guess, but look at these:

  • Earlier on, we had news that Tamron (partly owned by Sony) joined M43, which seems to suggest that that Sony is OK with Tamron making lenses for M43 even though M43 cameras are competing with the NEX cameras.

  • Now, there is a rumour that there could be a Sony-Olympus tie-up, as bankers gains more control over the Olympus board (Source: Reuter via 1001 noisycameras)

We know that Sony has been negotiating to buy into Olympus for some time now and that it is likely to be the one who succeeds (due to a monopoly concern if Fuji with its own medical optics business should also have some control of the same business in Olympus).

Olympus badly needs an injection of funds and regain consumer confidence in its future, but the board seems to have been holding its gun with more drastic changes in spite of what happened. Until now, as execs are arrested and debtors seem to be able to force changes.

Also, Olympus executives tried so hard not to disclose the maker of the sensor in E-M5, which could be explained by the fact that negotiations for any tie-up are not final.

I think it would be great if Sony's superb sensors can be used in Olympus cameras from now on, as that has been the only major concern in Olympus making great cameras. Of course, there are also serious concerns with Olympus' ability to follow photographers dreams in making great cameras when beancounters take control.
