I've had great success cheaply using a small separate audio recorder (a $60 Tascam DR-03 unit). Just place it as close as you can to center stage front (without risk of getting trampled, and supported somehow to not get footsteps or other close mechanical noises) and aim it towards your sound sources. Most editing programs will let you sync it with your video with varied levels of difficulty.

You can try cheap wireless systems, but I think they're too much headache with interference and battery and SQ issues. A $600 Sennheiser G3 system is the minimal level, IMO, for usually good/great performance. At 1/10th the cost and depending on the situation, 90%+ of the performance I'm sticking with my tiny Tascam until I'm flush with production cash!

There are plenty of other small recorders that have relatively great sound with their built in mics. You just need to get the mics as close to the sound source as possible.
