I know you mentioned you would rather stick with Canon lenses, but if I were you I would take a look at the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro. I own mostly Canon lenses as well as I think there are a lot of poor offerings from the likes of Sigma/Tamron, but this lens far exceeded my expectations when I used it on a crop sensor.

The build quality is phenomenal, and the macro ability came in handy a lot more than I thought it would. IQ is extremely sharp, and it is also roughly half the price of the Canon 17-55 f/2.8.
