Technical question re Foveon 12Mp vs. 46 Mp

The specifications for the DP1m say there are different RAW image sizes - 46, 24(?) and 12Mp. I note my first-series DP1 does not allow different RAW image sizes.

So here's my question: is the reduction in size accomplished by pixel binning? Or do they just turn off every other pixel?

And if so, will this revive the old sensor's advantage of having larger (though fewer) pixels?
