Please give away your work for nothing!

The emails continue..sadly

Hello Barry,

My name is Kay Lynch and I am based in Tralee, a tourism co-ordinator for a new county- wide initiative to market county Kerry as a premier tourist destination – . This new website will be going live shortly (temporary website up at present) and we are actively seeking photographs and videos to depict the natural beauty and unique experience that a holiday in Kerry delivers. As we are a not for profit organisation we are not in a position to purchase photos but if you are interested in supplying some photos we would be delighted to credit your work on the website. For 30 photos or more we can create your own webpage on the website.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Kay Lynch Tourism Co-ordinator Tralee

My response was something along the lines of that it's not appropriate for local business to have a financial benefit without giving something back to the photographers who have invested a lot of time, effort and money in making these images.

Thus I declined and informed them no images would be released unless an appropriate fee is paid. I get quite annoyed at these emails because if I asked for a free weekend break in the summer to Dingle and wanted to stay at a nice hotel, free breakfast and a nice meal in the evening I'd get told to go to hell!

So what exactly gives them the idea that a photographer is going to just hand over their work for absolutely nothing bar some crappy credit on a site.

The Tourism industry in Ireland is keen to promote the country, but not so happy to actually pay people for their work, yet it's business who benefits from it mostly the hotels and shops in the region.

Thanks, but no thanks

Whilst I'm here the well known Harlan Ellison rant sprang to mind..enjoy
