Thanks for all the help everyone! Seems like the f/2.8 is the general consensus. Given though that I'll be shooting almost exclusively at 200mm and as some of you have suggested keeping it wide open at f/2.8, would it be worthwhile considering the Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 L prime lens?

Has anybody used this and can comment on the IQ at 200mm f/2.8 vs the 70-200mm? It is about $500 cheaper and quite a bit smaller and lighter. It is also far less intrusive if I wanted to take it somewhere the 70-200mm may be frowned upon (professional sporting events etc).
