50mm 1.8 sharper than 300mm f4L and 400mm f5.6L?
Feb 12, 2012

Hi,

I did a test photographing a note with the 50mm 1.8, which I know is a very sharp lens, and then with a 300mm F4L and a 400mm f5.6L.

All the lenses were stopped down, all the pictures are well sharp, but the 50mm 1.8 has an edge.

Is it because there is a lot of air between the long primes and therefore there is some diffusion that acts like a blurring filter, or is it because you can't really beat a 50mm in terms of sharpness?

Thanks for your input.
