Canon EF 70-200 f/4 IS vs f/2.8
Feb 12, 2012

Hello All,

I'm tossing up between the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 IS and the same f/2.8 non-IS version. I can get them for roughly the same price, but am not willing to pay the extra $1000 for the f/2.8 IS.

I will mainly be shooting outdoor team sports with the lens (Rugby, American Football etc) during the day (possibly some twilight under lights). I'm assuming the difference in depth of field won't matter too much given that empty space between my subject and the opposite sideline will be great enough to allow for decent bokeh at f/4 and possibly even lower.

I will be using a 5D MkII, and will only occasionally be using a tripod, which is why I thought the IS might be the go. I'm keen to listen to any experiences people have with the two and find out what differences (if any) exist between the two in IQ.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!
