For some comparisons, the science is pretty clear on the fact that you need to compare at equal sizes, or else the numbers become incommensurable.

For photography, you can do what you like. And why not. It is possible to get an actually good 36MP out of this sensor, with its rather deep wells.

But for measurement purposes, the entire enterprise is scale-dependent. Noise and signal -- and pixels -- do not scale up or down without a qualitative change.
