I keep reading that EOS DSLR's produce soft images...

Hi everyone,

I currently use a Canon 300hs point and shoot - great little camera for the size.

I'm interested in getting my first DSLR, but have repeatedly read that Canon DSLR's produce softer images than their compact cameras, and this gives me pause.

I would like to explore manual modes, faster AF etc that DSLR's offer, but I am not too interested in playing around with RAW right now (moved to new city, started new job, limited time).

In JPEG, is the camera softness a true issue? Do most people increase sharpness levels in-camera? For those who use both compact cameras & DSLR's, is there a noticeable change in perceived image sharpness in favor of compacts?

Thank you kindly.
