Local store gets shipment of d700 and d7000
Coming from a D200 (an excellent camera in its day, and still perfectly fine in 2012), you will be pleasantly surprised by what the D700 can do. I had a D200 for a few months (got in on the $599 Best Buy new D200 body deal) and at ISO 100 the quality was superb in every way, better than the D300 at ISO 200 in some ways as well, but by ISO 800, the D200 image quality really started to fall apart. The D700 is clean all the way up to ISO 1600, and useable up to ISO 6400. I've made 12x18 inch prints from photos I took in the evening at ISO 6400 and the quality is superb. Not selling my D700 any time soon!!
