Something else that always baffled me, was seeing the "Pros" at some events lugging a couple of high-end FF DSLR's, with expensive lenses attached, then submitting the photos which are subsequently downsized and downgraded for newsprint. Hardly seems worth the effort and expense... or maybe I am missing the point?

To some extent you are - it's about speed and reliability more than outright image quality. One of my oldest photo buddies is a PJ and he uses FF pro SLR gear precisely because it covers all bases - one day could see a planned feature shoot with multi-speedlight setup followed by sports coverage with a big telephoto followed by several hours stood in the rain, waiting for a court case to finish so he can jostle with the other 'togs to grab shots in failing light as the defendant leaves.

Simply put, it's a varied job and the gear is put through hell. Whilst a K-r or m4/3 camera could deliver sufficient quality images, could it be counted on to do so quickly and reliably day in day out in all conditions? As for expense, the media group owns all the equipment - don't know if that's the usual case though?

Back to the original point, he is seeing an increased use of 'amateur' snaps that are sent in (doesn't phase him... yet) and thinks the next round of equipment upgrades will leave him with a DSLR that does video - which he'll be expected to learn to use.
