A really dumb question about Nikons....

I'm a bit curious about this:

When using a Nikon with a lens that has its own autofocus motor (e.g. an AF-I lens), does the camera body know not to bother spinning its internal autofocus motor?

If so, how is this accomplished?

And better yet, in the early 2000's (where most autofocus lenses were mechanically driven by the camera body and AF-I lenses were rare or non-existent), how did cameras like the F5 and F100 know to shut off their autofocus motor?
