Nikkor 16-85 mm lens problem

"Would it mean you're out of range for auto ISO? Would the blinking flash mean the camera is suggesting it's too dim and you need the flash. Seems to me both mean the same thing almost. "

....except at full wide (16mm) the lens is at its lowest aperture (f3.5).

and other things to check:

1. Did you try cleaning the contacts on the lens and the body?

2. Did you try "working" the lens, zooming from 16mm to midway and back a lot of times to see if you may be able to clean an internal contact with the motion?

3. Set the aperture to the lowest setting (3.5) and check to see if the camera "knows" it is at 3.5 and at what focal length it goes up to f4 and then 5.6. Is that all working as expected?
