Yes it is pure marketing. The D800 is to compete with Canon's 5DmII/III market. The D4 will compete with the 1DmIV. Nikon is hoping that those that will be buying the 1DmIV will be buying the D4 instead since the D4 is full frame, 100% VF, FPS & etc at about the same price.

AND

The D800 is not introduced to compete with the D4.
