Ideal D800 lens kit

Probably a dum question but is there a way to compare sensor and lens resolution? What is the equivalent lens resolution of the D800's sensor? Does a lens with a resolution of 40 lp/mm exceed the resolution of this sensor?

Yes - I know that image quality and the look of the image are affected by many other and more important factors than resolution, but, on the other hand, I'd prefer not to buy a lens that can't match or exceed the sensor resolution throughout its zoom range and with a reasonable selection of apertures.
