Breech lock 50mm/1.4 SSC and FDn 50/1.4 are identical in terms of performance. I used to have FDn 50/1.4 and now have only SSC, there is no difference.

I'm not doubting you--lots of variance between copies.

But in these tests, the FDn is the winner. That said, I bet the SSC BL feels more solid and well built. The FDn 50mm f1.2 (or f1.2L) has a much higher premium build--superior perhaps to BL FD imo.

Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 breech mount (S.S.C.)
Canon EF with mirror and diaphragm prefire
Vignetting = C+ @ f/1.4, B+ @ f/2, A- @ f/2.8, A thereafter
Distortion = barrel
Aperture Center Corner
f/1.4 B- C
f/2 B+ B-
f/2.8 A- A-
f/4 A- A-
f/5.6 B+ B+
f/8 B+ B+
f/11 B+ B
f/16 B B

Notes: moderately low contrast at f/1.4; moderate contrast at f/2; moderately high contrast at f/2.8; high contrast at f/4 and f/5.6; very high contrast at f/8 through f/16.

Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 bayonet mount
Canon EF with mirror and diaphragm prefire
Vignetting = C+ @ f/1.4, B+ @ f/2, A thereafter
Distortion = barrel
Aperture Center Corner
f/1.4 B B-
f/2 A- B
f/2.8 A- A
f/4 A A-
f/5.6 A- A-
f/8 A- A-
f/11 B+ A-
f/16 B+ B
f/22 B B
Notes: Very high contrast, except moderately high at f/1.4.

I remember seeing these B+, B- stuff somewhere. To me they looked quite arbitrary at least with respect to my copies, not only 50's but 24, 28 and 35 as well. I am not too enamored with breech lock build, to me it seems like weight wasted for no reason, but I also have 70g 50/f2.8 c-mount, so FDn is not a lightweight answer for me anyway. Aesthetically I prefer FL's, but they are rare.

FDns are build well enough for me. I sold FDn because the guy who bought it wanted FDn. If he wanted breech lock SSC, I would have sold that one. I just didn't see any optical difference at all.
