Ricoh's bridging the gap
Feb 5, 2012

So a couple of months ago Ricoh announced they'd seen a gap they intend to bridge. Moste people started considering different types of larger, professional grade cameras, like a FF mount and what else.

However, I'm quite sure that what Ricoh is coming out with is going to be pretty small. Tiny.

The PX is the first step and the first sign. Its simple to use and completely flat; the lens doesn't extend, like on a phone, which together with being dust and water proof makes it a much better camera to use.

Compared to all the other low end cameras, its a much better experience to use to take pictures, much simpler. Its crappy, but so is the competition.

IQ is only phone camera level, but the handling is much better thanks to the form factor and the physical dials.

So what Ricoh is coming out with is:

Android-powered, non-extending lens, very slim yet with the handling of a GRD, wifi-enabled supercompact. It's going to have proper control over things like ISO, aperture and everything else you can expect from a proper camera. But its going to be real small and really connected.

That's the real gap, supercompacts.
