The friends votes dillema
Feb 5, 2012

So here is a complaint about a particular entry in a challenge, it has an unusual vote distribution, most votes are in the average region, few votes in the high average region and then suddenly many five stars votes. Until now this was only known from the Tamron challenge where the winner managed to get 51 facebook and twitter friends to do that. http://www.dpreview.com/challenges/Challenge.aspx?ID=5456

So a little research reveals that none of the five star voters voted for more than a few other photos, for most of them it was the only vote in that challenge, whereas the bulk of the voters vote for all entries in small challenges. Moreover, this was not the first time, something similar happened in a previous challenge with the same entrant and several of the same voters. Clearly only one conclusion possible. Friend votes.

Obviously, these challenges are about the best photo and not about who manages to mobilize the most friends to vote. Obviously, like the Tamron challenge friend votes, this has generated a lot of frustration with the other contestants and it's the duty of the host to keep his challenges fair play as much as possible. So DQ. Clear.

Now suppose that you are an established talented and friendly photographer, a long time denizen of this community, who obviously got a lot of friends in due time. So you enter a challenge, not doing anything wrong, and whack, DQ, all a sudden, the host murmering something about biased friend votings. That's certainly a cold shower.

Now suppose that you are an admirer of some established talented and friendly photographer and it's not too hard to follow his activities and see which challenges he enters. Of course you want to please him so when the challenge goes to the voting phase, you find his photo back, and click the five stars. But would you realize that you have just frustrated the other participants, who start complaining, frustrated the host, who has to do something, and frustated the photographer by a sudden DQ.

But what would the host have to do, maintain the DQ due to biased voting to please the other participants, or un-dq since the photographer did nothing wrong?
