The "shutter lag" that you refer to is mostly caused by the camera's slow(ish) autofocus - and is the scourge of all point and shoots.

The only way around it is to half press the shutter so that the camera is pre-focused, then when you fully depress the shutter it's virtually instantaneous.

Someone may correct me here, but I don't think you'll find a fast focus P&S.

My first experience with digital was a nasty shock as I was used to a film camera which took photos when you pressed the shutter - not after the action had gone!
