Hi all, I notice that for alot of P&S cameras, their specs say they can take pics in 4:3, 16:9, 3:2 and 1:1 aspect ratios. But for their DSLR, they only say 4:3. does this mean they can't do the other aspect ratios?

Cameras produce images with an aspect ratio that is determined
by the size and shape of the recording medium (film or sensor) and
the physical and optical specifications of the camera

Canon APS-C sensors are approximately 22.3x14.9mm with
some small variation between different models. This gives an
aspect ration of around 3:2. Different aspect ratios are produced
by cropping the recorded image. There are a number of reasons
why you might want to do this. One obvious case is to record HD
video with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
