It's like evaluating any art form
In reply to Eric Tessmer, Feb 1, 2012

Clearly, there's some pretty awful work out there - flat, low contrast, garish color, noise, halos, etc. But photography (excluding documentary work or family happy snaps) is an art form and the quality of work will be endlessly debated.

If your goal is to produce a compelling image, it really doesn't matter how you got there. The image is the message. And whether or not the image moves you, inspires you, makes you think, these are the only criteria of worth.

Photography is kind of the opposite of life. In life, it's not so much where you ended up, it's the road to that place that matters.

Just my 2 cents.
