There is a similar thread currently running at Luminous Landscape:

Mark Segal, who did the formal review of the Epson 4900 at LL and who personally upgraded from the 3800, posted that he does not see a dramatic difference in the output from the two printers, despite the fact that the 4900 has a wider color gamut. His view is that the 3800 is better suited for occasional printing, while the 4900 is better suited for frequent printing.

Based on this recommendation, I have decided to stick with my 3880 and take a pass on the great deal that Shades of Paper has on the 4900. Perhaps the next generation of printers will have improved to the point that upgrading will make more sense for me.
