Best Walk Around Lens?

Under 1000 USD? Any opinions? I do like the kit lens, but I wonder if there is perhaps an all around lens that offers quality sharpness for the Sony lines that the Zeiss branded lenses should offer. I heard the 16-50mm is really nice if you have the LA-EA2. Just wondering about other people's opinions. Right now I really like keeping the 50mm 1.8 on it, but sometimes I wonder if I need a variable zoom lens instead.
