36MP and Film

36MP and Film

I don't understand why people say that 36MP is too much.

I never used film, my first SLR was a D50, but as far as I can tell isn't film essentially infinite megapixels. If that is true 36MP is not enough.

If that is the case how is it that some people say old film era lenses such as the D series aren't good enough for the digital cameras and how some of the current lenses won't be good enough for the 36MP D800.

Maybe there is something I am missing and if so could somebody explain what is going on.
