300 F4 + tc

I have wanted a 300mm F4 lens for a long time but I am not able to come up with the cash for a new one, so I am now considering a used non AFS Version.

Now my question..... I would like to also get a Nikon TC 20E III Converter but I am confused as to weather the TC with AFS will permit the 300 non AFS to autofocus, and is there any other concern I should have?
