Do I need a Nodal Rail For Panoramas?

Like the title says. Do I need a Nodal Rail For Pano Work? Under what circumstances are they needed? When are they beneficial and when are they absolutely necessary? And if I do need one does anyone have recommendations for something a little cheaper than RRS?
