B&W Forum way too contrasty???

Does anyone else think the B&W images we see in digital are generally way too contrasty???
I hope I'm not alone here looking at very short tonal ranges, and blocked up shadows which should be more open.
I had a B&W darkroom for 12 years and worked in it intensely.
Have we all been fed a diet of over contrast images, that we now see that as the norm??
Personally, I like to see a full tonal range from textureless black though 7-8 extra steps to a textureless white.
Many landscapes, etc here just show a very short range. Often super black shade under an open sky and and open trees. Total black shadows on faces under an open bright sky...looks odd to me.
Anyone else shed some light for me?
Thanks in advance Dave S
