Check out FileBrowser

I recently learned of a Finder/iPhoto/Aperture/LR alternative called FileBrowser, http://www.filebrowse.com/index.html

It's an alternative to the Finder that is optimized for images. It doesn't seem to have been updated recently (last version 2009, but works with Lion), and info about it is rather sparse on their web page, but it's a very useful and certainly beautiful way to find your stuff.

Essentially it uses a drill-down approach, kind of like Leap or Yep. Folders have small previews of the photos inside, and once you get into a folder all the photos show up, and FAST. It gives you info about them, and allows you to not only sort, but group. And you can use criteria like "camera" or flash. Or last opened, or a host of other criteria.

When you click the photo enlarges, but stays in context with the other photos so that you can see them. So you don't have to open them.

And it works with all kinds of other documents.

The application could use some improvements, and I'm guessing development is stalled, but it's definitely worth checking out.
