It's enough so as to not be the lowest scoring lens.

OK, but once you start looking at the other scores then you lose the "for the price" or other apologies for the lens. Those conditions are already factored in to these metrics. So, I'd say that while it may be the worst lens tested, it may not be the worst value. Apparently, there are lenses nearly as bad that cost more. Hurray?

and then claim that yes, in fact, the fuzzed up corners or added CA are annoying?

I think I was asking for a bit higher threshold than simply "annoying". I was hoping you had an example composition that places something important in the dead zone.

This may be one those things like the crooked painting or the tag sticking up in the back of the shirt. People who don't notice these things will legitimately (from their egocentric perspective) think that such things don't matter. People who do notice such things, can't help but notice them.

I've heard people who notice little details called "noticers". If you're not one of them, then it's hard to understand. If you are one then, arguably, you have a life that is both charmed and more difficult. You can enjoy things that other people miss and you can be annoyed by things that other people miss.

The people who notice fuzzy corners don't need to be convinced and the apologists will just say that this confirms their belief that fuzzy corners don't matter.

Is the composition so boring that you have nothing better to look at than aberrations in the corners? Or is it rather that since you know a priori that corners can be fuzzy, it's like an itch that you can't scratch? Sounds closer to OCD than photography.

I understand why you might say that. I'm a noticer and my wife isn't one. In fact, it's very easy to dismiss things that you don't notice as not worth noticing. Like anything there are extreme cases - OCD is one, and obliviousness is the other. Most people are somewhere in the middle, but just because people notice things that you don't notice doesn't mean that things they notice and appreciate aren't worth noticing and appreciating.

That's a gotcha question because there is no Sony alternative, but that's just part of the problem - Sony doesn't offer an alternative.

Nope, Sony does not. So you have to decide if you can do useful photography now with the current lens until there is another choice. So far the answer seems to be yes.

So? I don't see any point to what you're saying. It's possible to be happy with some things and have legitimate complaints about others.

I'm actually entirely satisfied with my 18-55. The early ones seemed to have issue, but the ones that Sony is shipping now seem great for a kit lens. I like mine!

Taken out of context, you can find a not entirely disastrous sentence in even the worst lens reviews. The conclusion, while not entirely negative, is not as kind.

Um, if you were paying attention, that statement in the section on sharpness and resolution. Hardly out of context.

I knew exactly what section it was from.

Yep, CA and vignetting can be issues. And the extreme corners will not be sharp. But all I ask is you show me a photo where unsharp corners is more than just "annoying" in the abstract.

This is a fairly meaningless request since there is no definition of the difference between abstract and real annoyance. Annoyance is annoyance.
