I resolved the same issue with my GF1 by adjusting the flash output down 1/3 EV and using forced flash in program mode. Because the GF1 does not have high-speed synch flash, using aperture-preferred mode is risky. If 1/3 EV is not enough, try 2/3 or 1 EV. Also, make sure you focus on the subject that you want to be properly illuminated by the flash. My understanding is that the GF1 includes subject distance in its flash algorithm, so if it thinks it is trying to illuminate a distant subject, then the flash will likely overpower a closer subject.
