Local verses mail order

I have always thought spending a bit more to purchase local was a good decision as depend on the local store for frequent training opportunities. Now that I am readying to purchase a D4 or D800 I am realizing the sales tax is going to make a significant difference. I actually thought it was a good idea for Nikon to "equalize" their prices but now find I am still leaning toward mail order. Thoughts?
