G1X - again with the video time limitation
Jan 16, 2012

Why is it that the G1X' HD and full HD video modes are limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds maximum shooting time? Is this to avoid that stupid EU tax on video cameras? This cannot be a file size limitation as both HD and full HD are capped at just under 30 minutes. And yet 640x480 is capped at one hour.

Does the G1X provide automatic file-spanning that starts recording a subsequent video when the previous file reaches the time limit? It would be a neat way to circumvent the EU law.

Other manufacturers have non-EU models without a time limit. They will record video until maximum file size is reached or the memory card is full. I suppose that it makes it easier for Canon to standardize production for all countries, but seriously, it's yet another greedy moneygrab that ends up limiting consumer choices.
