I thought the mantra was to invest in glass, not the camera body.
If you had bought the 80-200 f2.8 (for $1100) and was shooting it
with the D1h which cost $4650 at launch, you could use that lens
now with the latest D4. But that old body, with its 2.66Mp sensor,
is worth about $200 on ebay.

That same lens is going for about $500 on ebay. The glass definitely
holds its value better than the camera body.

You want another example? Try the 28mm 1.4 AF-D. Came out 15
years ago for $1700. Now, used examples are over $3K.
