You should of been at 2.8 to get as much light as possible in these light conditions to get you at least 1/250 shutter speeds at a minimum to freeze the action and dial in your iso manually to get the right exposure. If you are shooting in any auto modes like aperture or shutter and in average metering mode, you will probably also have to dial in probably at least +1 compensation because of all the white ice. Always watch your shutter speed and don't let it fall below the 1/250 or even 1/500. Good luck. That is one of the reasons that you have the expensive heavy fast glass. Use it to your advantage.
