Perhaps Amazon should require a list of active participants to reflect the current status of membership here. Otherwise, the totals are deceptive since inactive members are considered participants.

I may be misremembering, but I think the permanence of membership is meant to protect the cohesiveness of threads. I believe that one of the administrators once wrote about it. You can't truly withdraw from a board if your posting history continues to show up. But it past posts were withdrawn, then the dialogs you took part in would have gaps in them and make no sense.

At least, that's what I think was said. I guess if you are sufficiently offensive to have all traces of your presence removed, discontinuous conversations are seen as the lesser of two evils.
